Dear Visitor,
You are probably here because you’re interested in finding out more about me as a candidate in Congressional District 2 for National Delegate, pledged to Barack Obama, and alternatively, as an At Large Candidate.
I first found a true passion for politics in my involvement in Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, although I was previously active with Pete Ashdown’s Senate race in 2006. In February 2007, I began what has been an incredible journey into political awareness by leading a group of Utahns now known as Utah for Obama. We started out by meeting a week after the Senator’s announcement of candidacy, and have since accomplished amazing things. The core Utah for Obama group has grown to over 600 people since then, along with thousands more who have volunteered for Senator Obama here in Utah. We continued to meet, and had booths at community and political events, such as State and County Democratic Conventions, the Avenues Street Fair, the Gay Pride Festival, and so on. In June, it became necessary to become more officially organized, and I became the Chair of Utah for Obama’s Steering Committee. Along with the members of this committee, wonderful things were accomplished in Utah, both for the Obama campaign, along with Democrats in General.
As time went on, I realized that helping elect Barack Obama wasn’t enough. The true message of Barack Obama’s potential presidency goes all the way from Washington to the street I live on in East Millcreek. Everyone at every level of political involvement will be vital to accomplishing the Change in Washington that we’ve been working for. Even electing City Council members who are part of this idea of Change will play a role in this movement, and keeping average members of the public involved in what’s happening is key.
One of my personal favorite events over the last year was the Walk for Change in June. So many people told me upon returning from the neighborhoods they walked that they never thought that knocking on complete stranger’s doors could be fun and exciting. I believe that Barack Obama has become bigger than the man himself, and Utah is proof of that. Barack Obama is the face of a movement to take back our country. I am proud to be a part of that movement, and proud to help that movement translate to continued involvement in local politics by as many people as possible. And I realize that Utah’s Democrats aren’t apathetic – they just want to be shown how to make a difference.
So, in the fall of 2007, I accepted the position of Regional Director with the Salt Lake County Democratic Party. I have been working with Laurie Noda and the Legislative Chairs in our Region to make sure that everyone is informed about what is happening, and prepared for the upcoming neighborhood walks and other efforts the SL County Democrats will be participating in to drive citizen involvement. I look forward to continuing to work with local Democrats, and helping many more people make a difference in the community.
You may have heard about the upcoming Voter Registration Kick Off. We are going to knock on doors across the state, registering new Democrats. Utah for Obama will be doing this in cooperation with the State and Local Democratic Parties, and we’ll continue the effort through this fall.
I’ve spent many hours volunteering at the Obama Headquarters in Utah, while it was here, doing anything from making phone calls to fixing computers to organizing Results Watch Parties as other states voted. I spent 4 days in Nevada, volunteering just prior to their caucus. While I was there, I even volunteered to drive 3 hours away from the Elko office I was working with to a remote town to help canvass. I did this even knowing that I’d miss the opportunity to meet Senator Obama in Elko. As I told them then - I’d rather see Barack in Washington than in Nevada. Hopefully, this opportunity to become a National Delegate will give me another chance, though.
I believe in Senator Obama’s message because I believe that what you and I do will make a difference, and that is what his message is based on. That is why I’ve stayed so involved in his campaign, and will continue to stay involved in the Utah Democratic Party.
I would be proud to represent Congressional District 2 this August at the Democratic National Convention to cast a vote for Barack Obama. I am very excited to be able to continue the movement that was begun over a year ago, and nominate Barack Obama as the Democratic choice for President.
If you are a Utah State Democratic Delegate, I am asking you to join others in selecting the Delegates who will represent Utah to vote for Senator Obama, and I hope that you’ll vote for Delegate candidates such as myself, who have been a part of the grassroots movement since the beginning of Senator Obama’s campaign. Don’t forget - the voting begins this Friday, May 9 at 5 PM sharp!
Thanks,
Misty Fowler
