High Moral Ground
By Saintless. Filed in LGBTQ, Utah, politics |Reed Cowan is the guy producing the documentary from which we briefly saw video of Senator Chris Buttars accuse gay people of using feces for sexual pleasure. Buttars then posted a blog saying that Reed lied to him:
Sometime in January, I talked with Reed Cowan for over an hour. I felt it was a friendly interview and we covered a lot of ground.
Reed assured me that he would treat both sides of the issue fairly and that I would be treated fairly. He told me the interview would be public in about a year and I would be allowed to see his work and approve my part before he released it.
I took Reed at his word and am disappointed.
I believe traditional marriage is the foundation of our civilization and I’ll continue to support public policy that strengthens traditional marriage. I will also continue to oppose policy that undermines that foundation.
I’ve read every comment on there, and I find it interesting how many anonymous comments there are, especially in support of Buttars. I hope that the comments don’t stop. Please take a moment to respond with your thoughts.
So many of those commenters tried to claim high moral ground, saying things like “I don’t agree that their behavior is acceptable to society and to God. Homosexual behavior IS a detriment to society. The Bible is clear on how the Lord feels about gay/lesbian behavior.”
Now, I wonder how many of those people are going to care that the premise of the blog post from Buttars is an outright lie? Eric Ethington posted some audio of Reed telling Buttars how the whole process works, and even mentioning July as a target date. Eric also posted a copy of the signed release form.
So, how many people are going to still try to claim religious backing of their bigotry, and defend Buttars, while ignoring that Buttars broke that “minor” one that said “Thou shalt not lie”?

Well, actually, the Bible only condemns male homosexuality, and only when it is associated with pagan rituals such as human sacrifice. The Bible is silent on loving, monogamous gay relationships, as it is on most aspects of modern life.

I firmly believe that one day we will learn of Buttars gay lover. It’s one way to explain his obsession with the issue.

Do you think that Buttars is merely playing you? He has nothing to lose. Everyone already knows his awful reputation, knew it before he was re-elected, he got re-elected anyway. People outside his district donated to the cause to defeat him in this last election, to no avail. He feels untouchable.
This cause of finding common ground is only hurt by the reactions (on both sides) to Buttars’ remarks. Those leaning toward not acknowledging rights for gay and transsexual people see Buttars’ comments and think – “hey! Finally someone who agrees with me and dares speak up! I should be empowered too!” and it cements their conviction. It widens the gap. Those on our side of the argument see his message, get enraged, and rail against the man, the very idea that he could be so bigoted, etcetera. Our rants and complaints are often mean and inflammatory. We see no common ground between ourselves and this man. Again, from our side, it widens the gap.
The way to common ground needs to be the high moral ground. As a group, everyone needs to say something like “Sorry you feel that way, Mr. Buttars. We hope you will someday get to know a gay person and realize that we’re not immoral and evil. KTHXBAI”
But Buttars knows that is impossible. He’s going to throw these remarks out there, knowing it will fan the flames so high we can’t even see the other side, let alone find common ground. Arg.

Sadly, you are probably right, Jenica. But Buttars really isn’t fit for office, and not just because of his most recent comments. This is over and over, and I am beyond frustrated that John Rendell didn’t win last fall.

Really? Really? Just because one sound byte is released does not mean that you have the whole story. I’ve spoken with others who were present at the interview who substantiate what Senator Buttars claims. To childishly call him a liar and a hypocrite is a poor tactic and won’t convince anyone of your position. If you are going to really show how wrong Senator Buttars is, let’s see actual evidence that his position is wrong and not hateful slander against him. The hateful response to his comments only prove his comment of calling the gay community “mean buggers”.

A friend of a friend said they were there, huh? Well, nevermind. I’m sure they are right. I’ll ignore the audio clip with Cowan explaining to Buttars that the documentary would be released by July. I’ll ignore the video with him talking about Pig Sex. I’ll ignore the legal document he signed agreeing that Cowan could do whatever he wanted with the video. And I’ll trust some random stranger who knows someone who said something. Right. I’ll just check in my intelligence at the internet sign on screen, so I don’t have to worry about pesky “facts”.

Oh yes, a friend of a guy who I met on the street… blah blah blah. You can try to discredit things as you will. The fact that I am not willing to breach confidentiality does not mean I’m blowing smoke. I’m not defending everything Buttars said. I just wish that the gay community would treat others with the respect they so vehemently demand.

Oh, and Garrick- read Romans 1. It speaks of the evils of women turning from natural affection, and men lusting after each other. But hey, the New Testament doesn’t count does it?

“I firmly believe that one day we will learn of Buttars gay lover. It’s one way to explain his obsession with the issue.” I agree Nikki. I also have a feeling he’s a pedophile. It’s known what went on at his boys ranch with the abuse so…
The part of the bible that most self righteous people conveniently forget is the whole thing about LOVING each other.Yes, Love everyone. The point of the bible isn’t to find ways you are ‘better’ than others, it’s to better yourself.
